Bobolink
The Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) is a member of the blackbird family. It is 6.25 to 8 inches in length. It has a black face and crown as well as black underparts and wings. The back of the head and neck are buff colored. The back of the bird is black with a narrow, buff stripe down the center of the back. It has a white rump and white shoulders.
The song of the Bobolink is a bubbling cascade that begins with low, reedy notes and bounces upward. The song sounds like bob-o-link, bob-o-link, bob-o-link, pink, pink, pank, pink.
Bobolinks have been declining in the southeast. It is vulnerable to nest destruction because it nests in the grass at the same time that farmers are cutting their hayfields. It is considered fairly common to common in tall grass, wet meadows, hay fields, and grain fields.
