Equisetaceae - Horsetail Family

Equisetum hyemale (Scouring Rush)
Picture
This is a spreading, reed-like perennial that grows from 2 to 4 feet tall.  It is evergreen and has jointed, hollow stems that are about .8" in diameter.  The small leaves are bound together and form a narrow black sheath at each joint.

The stems can be pulled apart and rejoined.  Sections of the plant were bound into small bundles that were used by pioneer families for scouring floors, table tops, etc.

Found growing on moist banks and in waste places, especially along streams.
