actaea pachypoda - white baneberry/dolls eyes
White Baneberry/Dolls Eyes (Actaea pachypoda) is an aromatic perennial herb that grows up to 3 feet tall. The leaves are large, 2 to 3 compound, with long petioles. The largest leaves can have over 20 lobed and sharply toothed leaflets from 2 to 3 inches long.
The flowers are small, white, with 4 to 10 narrow petals that are each about 0.2 inches in length. The flowers are grouped into a tightly compacted raceme at the end of the stalk. The flowers are present from April to May.
The fruits are round, white, seeded berries about 0.3 inches wide with a single dark dot at the tip. They are borne on thick red pedicels. The common name Dolls Eyes refers to the resemblance of the fruits to the eyes once used in porcelain dolls.
White Baneberry is found in rich woods throughout the US and Canada.
Every part of this plant contains a powerful cardiac stimulant and the berries are poisonous.
