American Redstart
The American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) is a new world wood warbler. It is 4.5 to 5.5 inches in length, and gets its name from the reddish-orange patches on its tail ("start" is an old term for tail). The males are black with orange patches on the wings, tail, and sides of chest, and a white belly. It takes a full year for the males to develop their adult plumage. The females of this species have olive brown upperparts, white underparts, yellow wing and tail patches, and yellow patches on the sides of the chest.
The American Redstart is found in wooded areas and in thickets. The song of the American Redstart is a series of 5 or 6 high pitched notes or two-note phrases with a downward or upward inflection.
