Asclepias syriaca - Common Milkweed
This is a stout plant that grows from 3 to 7 feet tall. It is usually unbranched and hairy. The leaves are opposite, stalked, oblong to ovate to elliptic, hairy beneath, and 4 to 6 inches long. The flowers are purple to greenish, and the pods are spiny and erect.
This plant contains cardiac glycosides that are absorbed by Monarch butterfly larvae, making larvae and adults toxic to predators.
