delphinium tricorne - dwarf larkspur

​This plant grows from 4 to 24 inches tall.  Its leaves are 2 to 4 inches wide, and deeply palmately cut into narrow lobes.  It is somewhat succulent, reddish at the very based.  The petioles of the lower leaves are up to 6 inches long.  The flower is 3/4" wide.  There are 5 sepals which are petal-like.  The upper one extends into a slightly bent, backward projecting spur about 1/2" long.  There are 4 petals.  The fruit are 3 (sometimes fewer) widely diverging, horn-like, several-seeded pods, each opening along one side.

This plant is poisonous if ingested.

This flower is found in rich woods.  It flowers from  April to May.
