This flower grows from 10 to 18 inches tall. Several pink to red, drooping, heart-shaped flowers grow along a leafless stem. The petals form the "heart" and the inner petals form the "drop of blood." The leaves are basal, pinnately compound, and finely divided. The fruit is a 2-parted capsule.
This is a native perennial that is common to southern mountains. It resembles the more showy Asian Bleeding Heart which is often cultivated in eastern gardens.
