duchesnea indica (potentilla indica) - indian strawberry/Mock strawberry
Indian Strawberry (Duchesnea indica) is a weedy, ground-hugging perennial herb that resembles the wild strawberry but it has yellow flowers instead of white. The flowers are yellow with a yellow center (the above photo's center was dried up and is not typically brown), around .5" wide, with 5 petals. There are green bracts below the sepals that usually have 3 teeth and tend to be longer than the sepals themselves. The flowers are generally present between April and June. The fruits look similar to the wild strawberry in that they are red and look like strawberries but they are tasteless.
The Indian Strawberry was introduced from Asia and are usually found in lawns and in damp waste areas. They are widespread throughout the United States.
