This is a small plant with several smooth, heart-shaped to round evergreen leaves on long stalks.  One to several flowers arise from the rootstock and consist of a brown jug-shaped calyx that is up to 1.6" long with 3 large, spreading lobes mottled with purple.  The flowers lie on the ground.

The plant flowers from April to June.  It is infrequent, but is found in rich woods.
