This flower grows to 20 inches tall. The leaves are well-separated pairs, ovate-lanceolate to oblong, and from 1.2 to 2 inches in length. The flowers are tubular with 5 spreading lobes, pale blue to red-purple to white. The corolla is 3/4" to 1.5" wide.
The mature plants in the eastern part of the range have notched petals, those in the western part do not.
This plant is found in rich woods and fields. It flowers from April to June.
