The Scarlet Waxy Cap (Hygrophorus coccineus) is a small, moist mushroom with a blood red cap and stalk, and reddish to orange gills. The cap is 1 to 2 inches wide, conical, and knobbed, while the stalk is 1 to 3 inches long. The cap margin is incurved to spreading, moist, and smooth in texture. The gills are attached, close, broad, thick, but have thin edges. The gills are waxy in texture.
This mushroom is edible, and is found from July to November in deciduous and coniferous woods in eastern North America, Texas, and the Gulf Coast.
