Tufted Titmouse

The Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) is a member of the Paridae family (Chickadee and Titmouse).  It is 6.5 inches in length.  It has medium gray upperparts, a tufted gray head, and a gray tail.  The sides and flanks are a buffy brown color, and the underparts are whitish gray.  The bill is straight and black, and the feet and legs are gray-black.

The song of the Tufted Titmouse is a high-pitched Peter, Peter, Peter or Pete, Pete, Pete.    The female of this species sometimes sings, but it is not as vocal as the male.  The call is a harsh, fussy, scolding sound.  The Tufted Titmouse is a social little bird that is relatively tame around humans.  It can sometimes be seen digging in the ground where it has been known to hide sunflower seeds.  It will come to birdfeeders for sunflower seeds, suet, cornmeal, and peanut butter.  It also eats insects and their larvae, spiders, snails, berries, acorns, and other nuts and seeds.  It eats by holding the nut or seed in its front feet and using its beak to break it open.

The Tufted Titmouse is is abundant to common.  It is found in forests, parks, and shaded areas.  It is a familiar feeder bird.
