Vaccinium stamineum - Deerberry/Squaw Huckleberry/buckberry

This is a tall shrub that grows to 10 feet.  It has variable foilage, but it is mostly egg-shaped to elliptic.  The leaves are thin, not toothed, 1 to 4 inches long, and are typically hairy whitish beneath.  The twigs are hairy.  The buds are long-pointed with 2 to 3 scales.  The flowers are hanging, whitish, and bell-shaped.  The fruits are greenish to purple, sometimes white-powdered.

The stewed and sweetened fruits are said to be good when served cold.  Ruffed Grouse, Gray Fox, and Northern Bobwhite eat the wild fruits.  The berries are inedible when raw.

The plant flowers from May to June, and fruits from July to September.  It is found in dry woods and thickets.
