This is a tall shrub that grows to 10 feet. It has variable foilage, but it is mostly egg-shaped to elliptic. The leaves are thin, not toothed, 1 to 4 inches long, and are typically hairy whitish beneath. The twigs are hairy. The buds are long-pointed with 2 to 3 scales.
